Annie Fisher The slow burn of becoming a poet

Annie Fisher

The slow burn of becoming a poet
Annie Fisher had her first collection of poetry published when she was 65. Now 76, she is studying for an MA in Creative Writing at Exeter University, believing that, as George Eliot is rumoured to have said, It is never too late to become what you might have been.

This visually rich presentation will showcase a piece of work Annie has produced for her MA: a sequence of poems and word-art entitled Late Scriptures which ‘narrates’ her writing life. It will include a demonstration of ‘asemic writing’, a form of abstract visual poetry which some writers find can deregulate the mind and free up creativity.

Biography: Annie’s background is in primary education, initially as a teacher and later as a literacy consultant working across Somerset schools. For ten years she organised and judged the Somerset Literacy Network’s annual poetry competition for children.  Now retired, she writes poetry for both adults and children. Annie enjoys writing humorous as well as serious poetry and sometimes combines both elements within the same poem. She has had two pamphlets published by HappenStance Press: Infinite in all Perfections (2016) and The Deal (2020) and one more recently from Mariscat Press: Missing the Man Next Door (2024). She is a member of Taunton’s Fire River Poets, and a regular contributor to the online poetry journal, The Friday Poem.
